My junior year in high school I became friends with one of our school's foreign exchange students from Japan. Her name was Machiko, and she and I have been friends now for almost 25 years. She has come back to Kenai many times to visit and I have gone to see her twice in Tokyo. Our children are also now friends, and she and her family have become a part of mine.

In the summer of 2017 Machiko and her family came to visit us in Kenai. At the same time my cousin was visiting and told us he would be stationed at the naval base in Tokyo the next year. So my mind was made up - my husband, children, parents and myself traveled to Tokyo in the Spring of 2018. We timed it perfectly and were there to see the sakura at their most beautiful. It was an amazing experience and one my family will always remember. My kids loved it there and I'm sure we will go back to Japan again. This design was inspired by those incredible cherry bloosoms people travel the world over to see bloom in Japan in the spring.
